  • Japan Exchanges
  • Programme Options for Kiwis in Japan

WYS-Japan, our partner in Japan, has organised government and corporate scholarships that are really helpful.  Because of their work Kiwi kids can enjoy a WYS exchange programme at high school in Japan for just NZ$3500 (some conditions apply).

Japan

Japan is a country full of ancient traditions.  Castles, ancient temples, shrines, and palaces can be visited and all are photogenic.  Japan, however, is still the number two economy in the world, with all that means in modern consumer goods.  It is a wonderful place to shop, to enjoy nature, to marvel at the inventiveness of man, and to enjoy the warmth of Japanese family life.

At school in Japan things can be very different from New Zealand.  Get involved in club life after academic classes, participate in a festival schedule missing from Kiwi culture, and experience the unbelievable food.

10 MONTH PROGRAMME

The “biggie”. This option will allow you to really integrate into Japanese culture, attend high school (sponsored by the tax-payers of Japan), master the language, and live as a member of a Japanese family.  This programme can begin either in October (concluding the following July) or in April (concluding the following January - in time for you to begin your next academic year in NZ - either continuing at high school, or beginning university).

TWO-TERM or SEMESTER PROGRAMME

For those students who are unable to be away from home or ten months, but who still want to gain an intensive inside view of Japanese culture. The Semester Programme will run from April until August, or October to February.

INTENSIVE - ONE TERM PROGRAMME

This programme is designed for those students, who because of career decisions, reliance of family on them, responsibilities in their current Kiwi high school, or any other reason cannot be away from home for longer than about twelve weeks. Term 2 of the New Zealand school year is when this can be done, or over summer from October to January.

It should be noted that the three programmes cost the same if reciprocally hosting, that is, NZ$3500.

Departure from NZ for all Japan programme either April or October.
